The Bald Goat

We Are Not Robots

Choice

I don’t know what has happened in my house recently, but we have been invaded by things that my wife and I tried to protect our kids from. I wonder if I am in the right house when I begin hearing Hanna Montana on Piper’s radio, or “I choose you Pikachu” from Finn, or Barny’s “I Love You” song from Seven. I believe at this time there may still be hope for Rilian, but he has a special fondness for cats, so we will see what happens.

And this all reminds me of the words “In the beginning…”

Wait… That is not what you were thinking?

Huh… Well, let’s explore for a minute and see where this goes.

I find a common theme in many of my favorite movies:

What did Neo tell Agent Smith was the reason he wouldn’t die?

What did Dumbledore tell Harry Potter was what made us who were are?

What showed the bravery of little Hobbits in the face of such danger?

I believe it is the same thing that allows my kids to be fascinated with crazy stuff. The gift that God gave humans in the very beginning can be found in Genesis 1:26-31…the sixth day. God made man in his image.

We don’t look like God.

We aren’t as powerful as God.

We don’t know all that God knows.

We are not in all places at the same time like God.

We make mistakes and God does not.

So in what way are we anything remotely like God?

Yesterday I blogged and said God is Not a Robot and spoke about God having choices. And I believe when he created us in his image he made us creatures of choice. Creatures who can choose to do right and wrong. To choose to love him or hate him. And I believe he did this because he did not want to create robots that had to love him, but people who could choose to love him and choose to do what is right.

God I thank you for the ability to choose and ask forgiveness when my choices hurt you. I thank you for choosing to love me in spite of my bad choices. I pray the prayer of Solomon today:

give your servant a discerning heart… to distinguish between right and wrong. ~ 1 Kings 3:9
