God is Love
Within the last few months I have been introduced to the band Gungor. They. Are. Amazing! I was able to see them at the Red Letter Rock Fest on new Year’s Eve and actually got to meet the band at their merchandise table after their set. What a great group of people. I look forward to hearing them again at Catalyst Dallas in May. So Excited!
I want to share a fun song with you today by Gungor called “God is Not a White Man”. When Michael gungor introduced this song he talked about how the band is a part of a church in Denver Colorado called Bloom that is full of hippies. When you hear this song you can totally hear that vibe! Watch the video and then I have just a few comments below.
There are lots of ideas here. Actually the song tries to destroy a lot of ideas. Ways in which we have tried to claim God or put him in a box. Don’t miss the main line sung over and over: “God is love and he loves everyone.”
Everything we believe about God should be framed in that simple fact. Everything. There has been a lot of uproar lately in the Christian world with the release of Rob Bell’s new book, “Love Wins”. I have read the book, multiple times, and the one thing I can say is that those who brought about the most uproar about the book never read the book. But I believe there are two things more important here than Rob Bell’s book and the ideas of heaven and hell that are being slung around.
1. God is love and the Bible is the love story of God for his people.
2. We are told to follow the example of God/Jesus in how we live with each other.
This song makes me want to love people. To stop trying to corner the market on God and simply follow his example. To join the world in a global hug-fest as we drink Coca-Cola and sway back and forth with our arms around each other until we reach that awkward moment when the laughter dies down and we go back to work until the need arises to sing and have another coke.
So, who wants a hug?
One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
