The Bald Goat

Competition

Too many peopleI was talking to Brian today about other lawn care companies. How does he feel about them? Do lawn care companies get along with each other? Is there any cooperation and camaraderie or is it cut throat and dog eat dog? I was trying to get a feel for this new world I am living in and those who also inhabit this world.

Brian’s answer was perfect. We all work really hard and there is more than enough work for all of us.

We can easily lose a lot of sleep worrying about who has what customer and how many customers someone else has and on and on. It would not matter at all. What is important is how we treat our customers. It is not a competition. We can all get along.

Our conversation seriously went to church. Our next thought after talking about business cooperating was talking about churches cooperating. Because so often churches don’t. We concern ourselves with how many members we have or how big our building is or how many special programs we have and on and on. And we treat it like some kind of competition. As if the bigger church is winning some sort of contest to prove who is better. I am not anti-big church. In fact my family is a part of one of the largest if not the largest churches in the area. But that does not make it better. Because it is not a competition. Like Brian said, there is more than enough work for all of us.

Lord, let us learn to understand the need for more than one church family to care for the needs of all the lost and hurting in the world. No one church could handle everyone. It would be a nightmare. But the flip side is a nightmare when we can’t see the bigger picture of a unified body and learn to work together. Let us meet the need for our many bodies and celebrate the joy of a unified body in you.
